Low Dose Aspirin

Low Dose AspirinWhat is Low Dose Aspirin

Well, basically, low dose aspirin is just how it sounds, a lesser dosage of regular adult Aspirin.  Adult Aspirin usually contains approximately 325mg of the main ingredient, acetylsalicylic acid. Some brands of low dose aspirin only contain between 81-100mg of acetylsalicylic acid. Most brands of low dose aspirin contain 81mg as it seems to be the standard MG for acetylsalicylic acid in low dose aspirin, however some brands can offer a slightly higher dose. Many people also have the question, Is Aspirin an NSAID?

What is low dose Aspirin used for?

Low dose aspirin is mainly used for people who have a history of either heart attack or stroke. Scientific studies say that people on a low dose aspirin regimen, who have had either a heart attack or stroke before, have a less chance of having another heart attack or stroke if they are on an aspirin regimen. Before starting a low dose aspirin regimen, you should always consult your doctor about the risks and benefits. A doctor will either recommend you take your low dose aspirin either once a day or every other day. Your doctor should make the final determination about how often you take your low dose aspirin.

What else is low dose aspirin used for?

Low dose aspirin can also be used:

  • After a heart attack, to prevent another one.
  • By people who have coronary artery disease.
  • By people with stable angina.
  • By people with unstable angina.
  • After bypass surgery or angioplasty.
  • By people who have had a stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • After surgery to prevent a stroke (carotid endarterectomy).
  • By healthy men over age 45 when the benefits of aspirin to prevent a heart attack are greater than the risk of stomach bleeding from taking daily aspirin.
  • By healthy women over age 55 when the benefits of aspirin to prevent a stroke are greater than the risk of stomach bleeding from taking daily aspirin.

It should also be noted (and confirmed by a doctor) that there may be an instance where low dose aspirin may not be adequate. This case is when you suspect you are having a heart attack. If this is the case, you will want to take a regular dose of aspirin, or if you don’t have any on hand, you can take 4 low dose aspirin.
